About Terp Lions
Providing cultural enrichment to the University of Maryland by practicing, performing, and teaching the art of lion dancing.
History
Terp Lions was founded in Fall 2023 by Brian Chen (‘26), together with Arthur You (‘27), Amanda Trieu (‘27), Tiffany Lee (‘26), and a small group of starting members.
From storing lion heads in dorm rooms to practicing outside on McKeldin Mall, Terp Lions embarked on a steady journey to spread their name across campus.
What started as a small 10-member troupe grew to a sizable club that regularly performs at on and off campus events. In Spring 2024, the following semester, Terp Lions performed at several campus events, such as CSA’s Lunar Banquet, TASA’s Night Market, SEE’s Spring Fest, and Maryland Day.
As of Fall 2024, Terp Lions is an SGA-recognized, department-sponsored student club that has 27 active members, hosts regular practices, and performs at various on and off campus events.
Style
During its inception, Terp Lions was a Futsan oriented lion dance troupe: however, Terp Lions has recently experimented with creating its own style. This unique style combines several styles from local lion dance troupes.
